Eine Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft im 20. Jahrhundert war bisher ein Desiderat. Ausgehend von den Vorgängern de Saussures werden in den Hauptkapiteln die wichtigsten Strömungen hervorgehoben, wobei besonderes Gewicht auf nachhaltige Ansätze gelegt wird. Gleichzeitig wird der wissenschaftliche Ertrag ausgewertet. Am Ende werden die Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts benannt. Im Anhang wird die Problematik der Mathematisierung in der Sprachwissenschaft angesprochen.

Die kognitive Grammatik ist ein Beitrag zu den Kognitionswissenschaften, insofern die Kategorisierungsleistung und Systemorganisation der Sprache einen Zugang zum menschlichen Denken eröffnet; sie erneuert aber auch die Linguistik, indem sie die in den Grammatiken beschriebenen Regularitäten mit Begriffen der Psychologie, der Anthropologie und der Neurologie einer Erklärung zuführt. Da verschiedene Paradigmen entstanden sind, wird die Darstellung in den Hauptkapiteln nach Ansätzen und ihren Initiatoren (Lakoff, Talmy, Langacker, Fillmore/Kay/Goldberg, Fauconnier/Turner) getrennt. Dadurch wird eine detaillierte Bewertung der Fortschritte und Problemzonen der kognitiven Grammatik ermöglicht. Die Grundidee, eine semantisch motivierte Grammatik, die zu Einsichten in das (sprachliche) Denken führt, bleibt dabei identisch. Der Ausgangspunkt: Was heißt Denken und wie kategorisiert die Sprache Erfahrung?, wird in den beiden Anfangskapiteln präzisiert, so dass der Weg, den die kognitive Grammatik seit etwa 1970 zurückgelegt hat, deutlich wird. Ziel des Studienbuches ist die Darstellung der Forschungsmethoden und ihrer Resultate. Dies öffnet Perspektiven für die Zukunft einer interdisziplinären Grammatikforschung.

Die Studien und fiktiven Dialoge zu Giordano Bruno werden eingerahmt durch eine Beschreibung seines Lebensweges (besonders seiner Jahre in Deutschland) und eine Reflexion über das "extreme Denken". In den Studien werden alle großen Themen im Werk Giordano Brunos angesprochen: Kosmologie, Komödie, Poesie, Magie, Gedächtniskunst, Wissenschafts­philosophie, Physiognomie, Ethik und Religion. In den Dialogen erlebt der Leser Bruno im Gespräch mit: Shakespeare, Dee, Moncenigo, Hajek, della Porta und Bellarmin; weitere Gespräche bringen seinen Schüler Besler mit Galilei, Kepler mit Descartes zusammen. Schließlich beraten zwei Würdenträger nach dem Sturz Napoleons den Verbleib der Prozessakten.

René Thom, the famous French mathematician and founder of catastrophe theory, considered linguistics an exemplary field for the application of his general morphology. It is surprising that physicists, chemists, biologists, psychologists and sociologists are all engaged in the field of catastrophe theory, but that there has been almost no echo from linguistics. Meanwhile linguistics has evolved in the direction of René Thom’s intuitions about an integrated science of language and it has become a necessary task to review, update and elaborate the proposals made by Thom and to embed them in the framework of modern semantic theory.

The general topic of this book is the development of a “realistic” model of meaning; it has to account for the ecological basis of meaning in perception, action, and interaction, and is realistic in the sense of “scientific realism”, i.e. it is based on the most successful paradigm of modern science: dynamical systems theory.
In Part One a model of sentences is put forward. The first chapter outlines the philosophical background of a theory of meaning. Chapter 2 gives a very short summary of recent proposals for a semantic model which considers image-like schemata. In Chapter 3 a realistic model of valence and basic predication is developed in detail. Chapter 4 treats multistability in meaning and the application of chaos theory and dissipative structures in semantics. Chapter 5 outlines the global framework of a stratified universe of meanings, and Chapter 6 prepares the way for Part Two: the analysis of narrative texts. Oral narratives of personal experience are the prototypical form in which experienced events are organized with the aim of remaking a piece of reality. In Chapter 7 a discrete grammar based on vectorial schemata is developed. Chapters 8 and 9 elaborate the “syntax of narratives” in Chapter 7. Chapter 10 progress to conversational dynamics.

Wolfgang Wildgen presents three perspectives on the evolution of language as a key element in the evolution of mankind in terms of the development of human symbol use. (1) He approaches this question by constructing possible scenarios in which mechanisms necessary for symbolic behavior could have developed, on the basis of the state of the art in evolutionary anthropology and genetics. (2) Non-linguistic symbolic behavior such as cave art is investigated as an important clue to the developmental background to the origin of language. Creativity and innovation and a population's ability to integrate individual experiments are considered with regard to historical examples of symbolic creativity in the visual arts and natural sciences. (3) Probable linguistic 'fossils' of such linguistic innovations are examined.
The results of this study allow for new proposals for a 'protolanguage' and for a theory of language within a broader philosophical and semiotic framework, and raises interesting questions as to human consciousness, universal grammar, and linguistic methodology. (Series B)

Die nach den Prinzipien einer copernicanischen Kosmologie aufgebaute Gedächtnistheorie Giordano Brunos wird anhand seiner Texte exakt
rekonstruiert und als wichtiger Beitrag zu einer theoretischen Zeichenlehre (Semiotik) interpretiert. Im einleitenden Essay faßt der Autor anhand
von Reiseeindrücken seine semiotische «Lektüre» der Orte, an denen Bruno gelebt hat, zusammen. Die beiden ersten Vorlesungen sind
dem Lullismus und Copernicanismus als Basis der Innovation in Brunos Gedächtnistheorie gewidmet. Die dritte Vorlesung beschreibt die
Entwicklung der gedächtnistheoretischen Schriften Brunos (Paris, London, Wittenberg, Prag, Frankfurt) und die vierte Vorlesung rekonstruiert
exakt zentrale Aussagen der letzten Schrift:
De imaginum, signorum et idearum compositione (Von der Zusammensetzung der Bilder,
Zeichen und Ideen

Le paradigme morphodynamique a été introduit par René Thom vers 1970 et fut élaboré par l'auteur pendant deux décennies. Ce livre présente le paradigme et propose des applications pour tous les domaines majeurs de la linguistique contemporaine. Les chapitres centraux traitent des problèmes du lexique, de la morphologie, de la syntaxe, de l'analyse textuelle et de l'énonciation. Un appendice donne une introduction à la mathématique qualitative.
Cet ouvrage répond à une demande légitime: un paradigme nouveau doit montrer son efficacité et son originalité dans tous les secteurs d'une discipline afin de remplacer les paradigmes désuets.

This book is about the interrelationship between nature, semiosis, metarepresentation and (self-)consciousness, and the role played by metarepresentation in evolution.
Representations must have emerged via self-organization from non-representational systems (found in physics, chemistry and biology). Major steps have been the evolution of molecules, macromolecules, life, and finally cultural and symbolic systems. Representations and signs are therefore parts of a huge, possibly branching «ladder of beings». Metarepresentations – images representing images, language about language and language-use, thoughts about thoughts – constitute a fascinating theme within such diverse areas of research as philosophy, literature, theology, anthropology and history, neuroscience, psychology and linguistics.
The contributions to this book reflect this variety of different, but often interrelated perspectives on metarepresentation. They also exemplify the difficulties of a truly interdisciplinary discourse and show how one may start such a discourse in the field of semiotics, understood as a meta-discipline which brings together all scientific enterprises dealing with human mind and human culture.

The French mathematician René Thom (Fields medal 1958) died in 2002. In this volume his contributions to biology, semiotics and linguistics are discussed by a group of scholars who have continued his work and have shaped the new paradigm of dynamic semiotics and linguistics. Thom’s heritage is full of revolutionary ideas and deep insights which stem from a rich intuition and a sharp awareness of the current state of the sciences, including their potentials and risks. The contributions to this volume are elaborations of papers given at a colloquium at the International Center for Semiotics and Linguistics of the University of Urbino (Italy), in 2005.
The central concern of this volume is semiogenesis, i.e. the evolution and differentiation of meaningful («pregnant») forms in the field of symbolic systems – from bio-communication to language and cultural forms like music, art, architecture or urban forms. The basic questions are: How are meanings created and further differentiated? Where do they come from? What kind of forces drive their unfolding? How can complex cultural forms be understood based on simple morphodynamic principles?
Applications concern the perception of forms by animals and humans, the categorization of forms e.g. in a lexicon, and predication or other complex symbolic behaviors which show up in grammar or in cultural artifacts like the unfolding of urban centers.
